It will also be worth popping the cover off the DVD player to see if it is rusted over. You might be able to slide your hand up the back without sliding the unit out - but you won't be able to see what you are doing. There were two leads (possibly blue and white) in the back of the single slot DVD player thing (which was mounted in the left rear panel from within the boot) - I slid the DVD thing out using an old wire coat hanger cut into 4, and then just unplugged both leads. If you do need a replacement screen, I might know a man with one for sale!! The only tricky bit is getting the vent covers back on without damaging the pillar trim but easy as long as you are keeping your eye out. It took me about an hour to get it all to pieces out and back together again. If your screen has broken, which is apparently pretty rare but not unheard of, then swapping the unit in the dashboard is a pretty simple thing to do - I found a youtube clip that runs you through the process. So albeit that I didn't have to buy a new DVD player I do have a £200 screen sat at home doing nothing - which I'll stick on ebay if (i) I can find time and (ii) I can work out how to sell stuff on ebay! At some point in the future I might upgrade to the MKIV.Īlso, the screen that I purchased on ebay was in fact a fully working version – the Navman tested it for me on his bench set up and it was perfect. I've done about 12,000 miles since unplugging the sat nav and I've not had a single problem. However, the best bit, and the bit I wish I'd known before driving to Birmingham, is that by simply unplugging the DVD player, the screen will come back to life!! On the basis that the MKIII sat nav is pretty rubbish and I never used it, I couldn't be bothered to spend £350 - but the screen now works as before and the CD/radio doesn't turn off. Andy sells replacement DVD (MK III) for £350 – the MKIV are much more expensive - £650 ish. If you pop the DVD player out and take the silver case off, you'll see whether that is it. The answer was that the motherboard looking thing inside the DVD player had lightly rusted over – from the outset there was no sign whatsoever of any water ingress. He knows his stuff when it comes to BMW car audio and electronics. So I took it to Navman (Andy) in Birmingham. I got a little bit suspicious and by this point I'd read every single forum page on faulty RR screens. I picked one up off ebay for a couple of hundred quid - I was then told that that was broken as well. I took it to my local Land Rover chap (not main dealer) - he said that my screen had gone and that I needed to buy a new one. Womble55, I had the exact same problem – one day my screen stopped working initially the radio and cd all worked fine – then after a couple of weeks the radio and cd started turning itself off – to the point where it would only stay on for five or ten seconds – I wasn't bothered about the loss of the sat nav but the lack of display and radio was something I couldn't live with.
